ANNUAL BALL’S ETIQUETTE
The annual celebration is a formal event, so it’s important to keep this in mind throughout the main event. Arrive early, as the celebration will start precisely at the scheduled time, without the academic quarter-hour delay. Before the event begins, there will be time for photos and socializing with other guests.
Upon arrival at the banquet hall, guests will be welcomed by the event organizers. Seating is pre-assigned, and guests can check their seats on the seating charts and table name cards. Everything needed, including a program booklet with song lyrics, will be available at the table.
Glasses are arranged with the water glass on the far right, which is the only one to be reused during the meal. Progress through the other glasses from right to left, without returning to a previous one. For example, wine served with the starter should not be revisited once the main course wine is served. The first schnapps is enjoyed during a group song at the beginning of the celebration. Schnapps can also be raised during other songs, or at the discretion of the table group. The toast is raised to shoulder height, with all participants lifting their glasses first to the left, then to the right, and finally to the person directly across.
There is one half-hour break during the main celebration, when guests can leave the hall for restroom or smoking breaks. Guests should only leave the table during breaks or for urgent reasons and should not return during speeches or performances. During speeches, it is customary not to eat or drink unless invited to raise a toast by the speaker.
Meals are served at the tables. You may start eating once your companion and adjacent pairs have been served. In smaller groups, it’s polite to wait for everyone to be served.
The ceremony master oversees the flow of the evening, introducing speakers and performers. By following the ceremony master’s guidance, each guest can ensure the best possible experience at the annual celebration.
